Good to hear from you Mark and I am glad to hear you are having success with survivor queens. I am sure with time, patience and perseverance, even the shb will be overcome. It all starts with healthy bees and it sounds like you got exactly that.

Dear fellow beekeeper, I have, from day 1, been entirely chemical/antibiotic free in my beekeeping management. To me it makes common sense to allow honeybees to adapt, as they have for countless ages, to any and all obstacles that face them in order for them to survive as a species. For 9 years now, my bees and I have taken our losses, I have used each surviver queen and her colony, with my help, to multiply into as many surviver colonies as I can possibly make. Out of 22 colonies that I now have, 9 of them are over 4 years old with out any die off. They are holding their own with the mites, easy to work with and store very much more honey than they need to survive winters here in East Central Kentucky. The small hive beatle has just found them last year and we will see how they deal with them as well.

That is AWESOME! I took some preschoolers to Vala's last year, and one got stung as well, which had never happened to me before, so I can see how it was increasing. I am so glad that Vala's had the for-thought to save the honey bees. We need them!! I hope they don't see any growth problems due to removing the bees, but on so many levels, I'm glad they did this! We were actually at Vala's near the mausoleum when we saw a guy in gear doing something... we thought maybe he was taking care of some bees. I wonder if that was you guys.

Thanks for taking care of the bees and keeping them around to continue to pollinate our plants!

Great job, Vala's! Bees can be pesky, but their overall value to crops and other plants outweighs the occasional buzzing around my head! I'm glad you decided to relocate the hive and I'm sure the bees in Fontenelle Forest will be thankful for the extra help! We love your farm and can't wait to visit this year!

The Vala's are awesome. If you haven't visited the farm, you are missing out on one of the greatest reasons to live in Omaha.

Fascinating topic. I recently began keeping bees in Northern California (two swarms and a split, which we've housed in two hives).

I spent the winter reading and attending local bee clubs. I read online discussions. And now, I'm trying to learn through watching the bees. It's fascinating.

I also have quite a number of native bees in my little urban yard, and have been observing and photographing them, as well.
